About five years ago, I created a website called HandicappedPets.com to help the caretakers of elderly, disabled, and special-needs pets. In that time, I've grown to understand how devastating it can be when a dog's back legs become weak, often leading to premature euthanasia.
Dogs with weak back legs are about as common as people with bad backs. Whether due to injury, age, or disease it's not uncommon for dogs to find it impossible to get up and walk. I set out to change this from a catastrophe to an inconvenience.
Wheelchairs for dogs have been around for a while, but they haven't been easy to use. Traditional wheelchairs were custom built for your dog. That meant :
1. You had to take careful measurements of every dimension of your dog
2. There was a wait of days or weeks while the cart was built
3. The assembled cart was so large that anything but the smallest cart wouldn't fit in the car
4. They look like somebody put it together in their garage
5. You could not resell your custom cart unless you found a dog of almost the same size.
That's not a solution, it's more like a painful, inconvenient work-around.
I decided that that was enough! It's time to make a cart that takes advantage of all the technology that goes into children's strollers. I set out to make it strong, good looking, fully adjustable without tools, collapsible, and simple.
So, after almost a year of design, redesign, development, planning, and production (far more complicated than I expected), I am pleased to offer the (patent pending) Walkin' Wheels.
Finally, when you dog gets a sore back, it's no big deal - just put him in a Walkin' Wheels.
. . . and there's still more work to do. In August 2008 the Medium size cart was ready. It will handle a Lhasa Apso sized dog to a Lab. Check elsewhere on the site for more exact criteria. Soon we'll be releasing a large size cart for huge dogs and a small size wheelchair for very small dogs, cats, and other pets. Watch for them!
