In 2002 a study by Purina Petcare showed that the group of dogs who had a controlled food intake lived up to 15% or two years longer than the dogs who were allowed free access to food for 15 minutes a day. Sadly, in recent times, obesity in humans has increased too and now, 22% of the British population are deemed obese with up to three quarters of people being overweight. In fact, a BBC website states that over 30,000 deaths in the UK are attributed to obesity. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The People and Pets Exercising Together (P-PET) study by Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Hill's Pet Nutrition showed that people and their pets are more successful at staying in a weight loss programme when they exercise together. 'People love their pets and don't want to let them down,' said Dr. Jennifer Jellison, Practicing Veterinarian. 'They also want their pets to live long and healthy lives.' Dogs were fed Hill's Prescription Diet Canine R/D and took exercise with their owners at recommended levels. This combination had remarkable results.
